Population register
Registration
All persons who are going to take up residence or stay in Norway for at least six months must notify the Population Register. The Population Register is a part of the Tax Office. When you move to Norway, you must contact the Tax Office in the municipality to which you have moved to give notification of move for yourself and your family, if applicable. Remember to bring with you your passport and employment contract. If you are not a Nordic citizen, you must also present a residence and/or work permit.
National ID number
The Population Register will issue a national ID number if you are going to stay in Norway for more than 6 months. The national ID number is made up of your date of birth and a "personal number".
D-number
If you are going to stay in Norway for less than six months, you will be given a D-number. This is an ID number which is given to all foreigners staying in Norway for less than six months. You use your D-number when you apply for a tax card, open a bank account, apply for national insurance benefits or the like.
