Those who have registered at the National Register receive an Icelandic National ID No. Foreign citizens who have obtained a residence permit are assigned a National ID No., and when they get it, they can apply for a personal exemption and tax-rate card at the Directorate of Internal Revenue.
Registration form
You can obtain a registration form on the Internet at www.thjodskra.is/en/services. The form may be sent by either mail or telefax to the National Register. A photocopy of your passport must accompany the filled-out form.
